Mulching The Beds
It’s always a great idea to add fresh mulch to your plant beds in the spring and late fall. (or any other time it’s needed during the season!) The more full our plants get over time, the easier this project becomes!
Mulch is WAY more than just a decorative dressing for your yard.
Some of the benefits of a regular mulch application schedule include:
insulation of plant roots from heat and cold
help hold water and nutrients in place
help prevent unwanted weeds from growing in particular areas.
The next Question is always “Well, what type of mulch is best?”
Answer: There are several considerations to be addressed before choosing the right type of mulch
Pairing the right color mulch with exterior colors can add a great deal of curb appeal to your home or business.
Moisture retention requirements can help to narrow the choices. Pine bark helps hold water better than pine straw or rocks. Rubber does a pretty good job as well if you decide that may be an option.
Take a look at your neighbors and see what they are using. There may be a “cohesive look” for your neighborhood. (there may even be covenants in place that determine what is authorized) This can make the decision for you. Easy Peasy!
Predict the amount of debris that will need to be cleaned up on a regular basis. i.e. leaves, branches, flowers etc. (for instance: It may be a good idea to use pine straw below the pine trees in order to make cleanup easy.) Coarse pine bark tends to stay in place better that fine pine bark or pine straw, with rock obviously staying in place best of all. (Rocks can be hard to keep neat and clean long term and are expensive to replace.)
