How tall should I cut my grass?

This question is not always as “cut and dry” (pun intended) as it may seem.

The best answer is: It depends on the season, climate and condition.

Here in the lowcountry, for sunny locations, cut your lawn at a height no lower than 1.5 inches during the summer months. You can go a little shorter in shady locations, but the objective is to give the roots plenty of coverage to better handle the stress that comes along with summer heat.

For the winter months it’s okay to cut as low as 1.25 inch for that final cut of the season.

It’s time to treat the soil and prevent weeds and pests at that point, but that’s for another blog…
