Proper Pruning
Proper pruning technique is essential to good tree health and beauty.
That’s right… It’s not just for the ladies anymore.
We’ve got a few simple tips to keep in mind while trimming your next tree.
First, look for branches that either cross each other or are touching each other while growing parallel. These are great candidates for pruning.
Before making a cut, look for the branch collar. This is the thicker portion of bark at the base of the branch. (it can almost look like a sock that’s been pushed down) Then look for the branch bark ridge that is parallel to the branch angle at the stem. Always cut outside of the branch bark ridge and angle your cut down and away from the stem to avoid the branch collar.
These same rules apply whether the branch is the size of your finger or the size of your leg.
By pruning in this fashion you allow the tree or shrub to heal properly from the cut, because just as in humans, proper healing allows the best chance to avoid infection or rotting.
Keep your trees beautiful and healthy with consistent and proper pruning!
